The Hanging Tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out
For his love to flee.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run,
So we’d both be free.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Wear a necklace of rope,
Side by side with me.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Do you remember thanging tree by la chapeliere follehis song? This is a song that Katniss sung for propaganda against Capitol when Pollux ask her to sing at District 12. The first time I read this, it makes me shudder. It was like a man who murdered three people want his lover to come with him to the death. And I imagine that man’s spirit wandering around the tree waiting for his lover to come, every midnight. Like a ghost story in Indonesia to me.

But if we dig deep, suddenly I see what this is about. Maybe that man and the girl live in the bad-bad-bad neighborhood. Maybe that man murdered three people who’s trying to do bad thing or maybe that three people want to kill someone else and that man just want to save the day. Or maybe that three people were bad guys and that man just want to protect everybody else from them. But that everybody else don’t wanna know. Murder is a murder. That man has to die, no matter how that man save everybody’s life. And that man consider, maybe that people just being mean, and he don’t want his lover live with mean people like that, so then he said, wear a necklace of rope side by side with me. Die with him because that world is too black to her.unthinkable_by_la_chapeliere_folle-d4o5ei2

Or maybe he’s not allowed to have a relationship with his lover, just because everyone seems against them. And he murdered tree people who’s mocking him about his lover. Why he ask his love to join the death? Maybe because they used to had forbidden love, and his lover was tortured because everybody thought she’s the femme fatale at the first place. So that man thought that maybe, death is the way they will be free to love each other without other people mending their business. If he can not be with her when he’s alive, maybe death will united their love peacefully. Okay, that’s too dramatic. But hey, life is a drama, right?

This is just my mad imagination. This is not related to Mockingjay or Hunger Games Trilogy. Sometimes, song lyrics has lot of meaning, depend on who’s listening to it. Maybe for Katniss, this song for them who live in Panem. If I live in Panem, maybe I would kill someone who set the never-ending-war at every district, or ask someone I love to die together, so we both be free. But, I rather to choose my version to define that lyric. Just imagine live in Panem, shivered me out, even though I love Hunger Games Trilogy.
